Journey of Comics

Wonder Woman made her first appearance in the 8th issue of ‘All Star Comics’ in December-1941. Then from January-1942, she was published in ‘sensation comics’. But in 1944, DC Comics adopted her and Wonder Woman became a DC Comics super heroine. From 1944 till today DC Comics is releasing Wonder Woman stories.

In July 2010, the 600th issue of Wonder Woman comics was published in which her costume was changed. Wonder Woman comic holds a wide range of readers and it is one of the best selling comics in the American comics market. Here is a small account of some of the remarkable issues of Wonder Woman comics.
#1 - The Origin of Wonder Woman
Diana prince along with Steve Trevor visits a circus - ‘King Circus’. There they come to know that somebody is poisoning the circus elephants. Steve Trevor suspects some crooks who were threatening the circus show. He follows those crooks while Diana; the Wonder Woman finds it out that some Burmese men who were working there as animal keepers had poisoned the elephants. Wonder Woman exposes the Burmese leader to be a Japanese spy and then she helps the circus to perform the shows and raise the necessary money for the war. Apart from these two, other characters presented in this issue are; Althea, Ares,Etta Candy,General Darnell,Hippolyta, Aphrodite,Baroness Paula von Gunther, Fatsis, Hercules and Mala.
#4 - The First Test of Aphrodite
Baroness Paula von Gunther has to perform three tasks in which Wonder Woman assists her. First task is to prevent America from a Japanese plan to incite a war between American men and women. Second task is to fight and defeat the king of the mole men; Blakfu. Third task is to reform some rubber magnet known as Ivar Torson and his association. They possess a secret rubber solution which can be very useful in prosecuting war effort. But they wanted to conceal that secret rubber from USA government. Wonder Woman and Baroness Paula reform their hearts. These tasks are performed by them on behalf of goddess Aphrodite. Finally Wonder Woman rescues baroness’ daughter who was captivated by Nazis. She was taken to Paradise Island later for rehabilitation.
#44 – Wonder Woman
Gail Simone was the writer of this issue and the artists were Nicola Scott and Doug Hazelwood. In this issue, Wonder Woman is portrayed fighting against the secret weapon of citizenry. This weapon is very terrifying and almost unbeatable and it is related to Wonder Woman in a very remarkable way. This incident has an everlasting effect on Diana’s life. Issue 44 is considered to be one of the landmarks in Wonder Woman comics series.
#162 – God Complex Part I
This issue was written by Ben Raab and the art section was handled by Tom Simmons and Derec Aucoin. Aquaman makes his guest appearance in this issue. He discovers that the members of justice league of America are haunted by some past history of theirs. A boat full of children mysteriously sinks and they all drown. Wonder Woman requests Aquaman to help her to find out exactly what had happened and how those children died. Aquaman is also one of the suspects. Now he has no other option left but helping Diana to find the real culprit and thus clear her suspicion about him.
#168 – Paradise Island Lost Part I
This issue was written by Phil Jimenez and George Perez and Phil Jimenez was the artist as well. In this issue a trouble occurs on Paradise Island. There are two different tribes of amazons living in Themyscira; Paradise island. They had some differences about their allegiance. One tribe worships the Olympian gods and obeys the orders of the queen Hippolyta. Another tribe doesn’t worship the Olympian gods and Antiope, Hippolyta’s sister is their queen. There is a big controversy between these two tribes and the signals of civil war could be seen clearly. The question that confronts Diana is, on whose behalf she should fight.
#186 – Feminine Mystique
Phil Jimenez was the writer of this issue and he also handled the art section along with Andy Lanning. Wonder Woman is on the mission of tracking down the he cheetah and Troia is behind the angel man. Eventually they both meet up and discover Barbara Minerva to be the original she cheetah. Barbara Minerva’s powers were stolen by some man and she wanted to avenge him. So, for that purpose, she was harnessing the powers of the furies. In next issue, wonder woman, wonder girl and Troia have a fight with the male and female cheetahs.
#194 – The Shocking Conclusion
Walter Simonson was the writer of this issue and P. Craig Russell and Jerry Ordway were the artists. The game of the gods comes to an end as the shattered God becomes powerful. He is standing at the centre of the universe ready to take over all the control and bend all existence and each and every element of the universe to his will. He had been an old threat to the kingdom of gods as well as universe. Diana; the wonder woman, who had lost her powers, now has recovered them and is ready to fight the shattered God. She has recently learnt the secret behind her transformation also. The question now is, if Diana will be able to defeat the shattered God or Wonder Woman will meet a sudden end.
#200 – Sensational Double Sized Issue; Wonder Woman
Many writers and artists were involved in the publication of this double sized comic celebrating 200 issues of wonder woman. In this issue, Veronica Cale releases Ares; one of the deadliest enemy of wonder woman. He, with his magic spells attacks Olympus. This astonishing phenomenon has an unbelievable effects on the citizens of Themyscira; the amazons. Their life style is suddenly changed. Now Wonder Woman has to solve this problem. Apart from this main story line, there are other sub plots. Eric Shanower elaborates an ancient myth regarding Wonder Woman and leads to another story written by Linda Medley. Then, there is a story about golden age style Wonder Woman which is illustrated by Rick Burchett and Robert Rod and a story about silver age style Wonder Woman by Christina Weir and Nunzio Difillipis.
#600 - Wonder Woman
This landmark issue was published on 21st of July 2010. The team behind this issue consists of J.Michael Straczynski,George Perez, Geoff Johns, Joe Madureira,Gail Simone and Phil Jimenez.This issue celebrates 600th anniversary of Wonder Woman comics. In this comic wonder woman’s journey and her role through 600 issues is reflected upon. They even have changed the costume of Wonder Woman in this issue.
#604 – Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman comic issue no. 604 is expected to get published on 27th of October 2010. J.Michael Straczynski,Michael Babinski and Don Kramer; this is the group of writers and artists working on it. It is going to be a 32 paged comic. The murky leader of the mysterious paramilitary organization is finally going to confront Wonder Woman in this issue and Wonder Woman is going to learn what has happened to amazons through all these years and the reasons behind it. Wonder Woman fans are eagerly waiting for the 604 numbered issue of the comics.
