Justice League of America

‘Justice League’, also known as ‘Justice League of America’ or ‘JLA’ is an imaginary group of superheroes that appear in DC Comics.
In the silver age of comics (1950s), DC Comics reintroduced many golden age characters.

At that time Gardner Fox; a DC Comics writer, was asked to reintroduce ‘Justice Society of America’ (the superhero group of DC Comics – first appeared in All Star Comics #3). As he was highly influenced by National Football League and Major League Baseball, he changed the name from ‘Justice Society of America’ to ‘Justice League’. Later the writers like; Denny O'Neil, Elliot S! Maggin, Mike Friedrich, Gerry Conway, Len Wein, Cary Bates, Steve Englehart and E. Nelson Bridwell wrote for Justice League and Dick Dillin was the artist.

‘The Brave and the Bold #28’ is the comic book where Justice League made its debut. The characters that belonged to this group at that time were; Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman. Later, superheroes such as Green Arrow, Hawkman, Atom, Hawkgirl, Captain Marvel, Black Canary, Plastic Man, Zatanna and many others were also included in the Justice League. The enemies of Justice League involve White Martians, Prometheus, Solomon Grundy, Starro, the Star Conquerer, Maggedon, Amazo, and so on.

In October 1960, this team got its individual comic book title ‘Justice League’ and the first issue got published. It was a grand success and Justice League Comics lasted for 27 years with issue number 261 of April 1987 being its final issue. In September of 1996, a limited series of Justice League of America was introduced and in 1997, a new Justice League series; JLA was launched.

The headquarters of Justice League was a secret cave near a small town in Happy Harbor of Rhode Island. ‘Lucas "Snapper" Carr’, a team member, later betrayed the team and informed a super villain; ‘The Joker’ about the secret headquarters. So Justice League shifted the headquarters to a satellite in 78th issue of the comic. Phantom Stranger, Red Tornado, Firestorm, Elongated Man etc joined the league during this time. Wonder Woman, who had resigned, also returned. Many superheroes kept on joining or leaving the league and the location of headquarters also kept on changing during the 27 years of its career as a best selling comic book.

Aliens from some planet were competing amongst themselves to determine the ruler of their home planet. The challenge was set up that whoever conquers the Earth first will win the competition and be the ruler. So, the aliens attacked the Earth. The superheroes of the Earth (Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman) were alarmed and they went to fight the aliens. Each of them individually proved to be weaker than the aliens so they all came together, formed a team and defeated the aliens; the Appelaxians. After this victory, the superheroes decided to continue working in a group and thus the ‘Justice League’ was formed. They continued fighting villains and criminals, established justice and spread peace and love on earth.

‘Justice League’, an animated T.V. series was produced by Warner Bros and it was telecasted on Cartoon network from 2001 to 2004. After that, another T.V. series came up titled ‘Justice League Unlimited’ which was aired from 2004 to 2006. ‘Justice League of America’ series has won many awards such as; Alley Awards of 1961 for Best Comic Book and Best Adventure-Hero Group, Alley Awards of 1963 for  Favorite Novel ; Crisis on Earth-I & II, Strip that Should Be Improved and Artist Preferred on Justice League of America- Murphy Anderson and  Shazam Awards of 1973for Best Inker -  Dramatic Division - Dick Giordano
