Dr. William Marston was a prominent American psychologist, feminist theorist, inventor and comic books writer. He is one of the foremost comic writers who is still acclaimed for his celebrated creation – ‘Wonder Woman’.
Olive Byrne (Olive Richard) was his former student who conducted an interview of Dr. Marston on October 25th, 1940.
This interview was published in a magazine named ‘Family Circle’ under the title of, ‘Don't Laugh at the Comics’.In this interview, Marston had elaborated his perspective on educational potential of comics. Maxwell Charles Gaines, a noteworthy American comics publisher, read this interview and hired Dr. Marston as an educational consultant of All-American Publications and National Periodicals, the two companies that later formed DC Comics.
This was the time when the world of comics was governed by male super heroes like Superman, Green Lantern, Batman etc. Marston and his wife Elizabeth wondered if they could create a female super hero. A super heroine, who will have all the qualities of woman such as tenderness, beauty, submissiveness etc and all the qualities and powers of Superman. She will not try to kill the criminals, but first she will try to win them by love and convert them into good human beings, a woman who will dominate and take over the world through submission. Wonder Woman was designed to demonstrate female empowerment. Marston talked to Gaines about this and even he liked the idea. He asked Marston to create such character.
Marston took a pen name; ‘Charles Moulton’ a combination of the middle names of Marston and Gaines and created a super heroine who was as powerful as Superman and had all the good feminine qualities. She loved peace and was very intelligent, kind and beautiful. Marston named her ‘Suprema’ but later the editor; Sheldon Mayer changed it to ‘Wonder Woman’. Wonder Woman was first published in ‘All Star Comics’ in 1941 and later in ‘Sensation Comics’. From 1944, Wonder Woman was published in DC Comics.
Marston was born and brought up during the time when women were considered to be weaker than men in physical as well as mental capacity. Through Wonder Woman character, Marston tries to advocate gender equality. Wonder Woman was the first female member of Justice Society – America.
