Evolution of Wonder Woman

Though Wonder Woman was originally created by Dr. William Marston, because of the popularity of this character and ever increasing public demand, DC Comics had to continue publishing Wonder Woman comics even after Marston’s death. So, she was later handled by other writers which resulted into many different changes in character, story, costume and so on.

Wonder Woman first appeared in ‘All Star Comics’ in 1941 and from 1944, in ‘DC Comics’. As per the original story goes, Diana – the Wonder Woman was an Amazon princess, brought up on ‘Paradise Island’ by Queen Hippolyta - her mother. She proved herself to be the most skilled Amazon fighter and the most intelligent person by winning a contest. Because of this, she was chosen to go with Steve Trevor to the world of men to fight crime. There she became Diana prince.

But during the silver age of comic books, i.e. between 1956 to 1970 (the age of economic success and artistic upgrading), there were modifications made in the Wonder Woman story. Her origin was made more Greek – based and mythological. They depicted Wonder Woman getting blessings and powers from different Gods. For example, she was blessed to be ‘as beautiful as the Goddess of beauty – Aphrodite, as wise as the Goddess of wisdom – Athena, as strong as the Greek demigod Hercules and as swift as the messenger God Mercury.

Mike Sekowsky was the regular artist and writer of the Wonder Woman stories during 1960 to 1970. At this time there was another twist in Wonder Woman stories. Wonder Woman did not want to go back to the world of Amazons but she wanted to live in the world of men itself. For that she had to give up all her magical powers and be like men. At that time, she happily decided to abandon the powers and stay back. The powerless Wonder Woman started a modern boutique. At the same time, she came in touch with I Ching – the blind Chinese martial artist and learned many martial arts and skills in handling weapons from him. She learned to perform many adventurous tasks being in the human limit.

After this, the Wonder Woman TV series started to be telecasted and it became very popular. So it was decided that Wonder Woman should go back to possessing the super powers she used to have in past. Her Justice League membership and her participation in World War II were brought back in focus. After the success of ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ – the comic book series, in 1985, Len Wein, George Pérez and Greg Potter, the three comic books writers launched the Wonder Woman character again as an ambassador and emissary came from Themyscira to the world of men to fight crime and bring peace and love. Recently, even the costume of Wonder Woman has undergone a major change.

Thus, over the period of these 70 years, Wonder Woman has evolved a lot in many areas.
