Wonder Woman; the Amazon super heroine, first appeared in All Star Comics in 1941 and from 1944 she appeared in DC Comics. Originally her outfit was a combination of red, white and blue colors. She wore a red strapless low cut tight top with an insignia of gold eagle and a WW golden sign on it, along with a pair of blue briefs or loose fitting shorts with white stars.

The blue shorts ended some inches above knee and she wore red and white knee high boots as footwear.Thus, Wonder Woman’s costume was designed and based on the colors of American National Flag. She also wore a gold belt, a star signed gold cap, golden tiara and bracelets of victory and carried the Lasso of Truth. Wonder Woman’s hair is black and her eyes are blue. DC Comics tried to change her costume three times but every time they went back to the original outfit.

But now, on the occasion of 600th anniversary issue of Wonder Woman comics, she is going to be presented in a completely new apparatus. Wonder Woman has undergone a head to toe makeover which was executed by the artist Jim Lee. Many fans had questioned her old costume in past, how can she fight wearing such a revealing dress? Don’t her parts fall out? As a response to this, Wonder Woman can now be seen wearing a tight fitting red top with straps, with a thick shiny black-blue leather jacket and a matching pair of leggings or shiny skintight pants. The puffy shouldered jacket has stars on the shoulder.

The eagle, the golden tiara, armor, Lasso of truth, bracelets, all of them have retained their positions. The bracelets are made more colorful and they can be tied on inside and over the hands. There is a W sign on each of them and when Wonder Woman holds them together, side by side, they form WW sign. When Wonder Woman hits somebody with them, they leave a W mark.

This new costume has created a big controversy. Some people found it good but some couldn’t accept Wonder Woman in her new look. She has lost her patriotism and she doesn’t look like an ambassador of peace anymore according to them. The old costume was a part of her roots and her distinctiveness. But J. Michael Straczynski asked how some one can keep on wearing the same outfit for 70 years.Wonder Woman was locked into that costume since 1941 and bringing her out of it doesn’t mean she is no more the same Wonder Woman. She is still saving the world. Patriotism should be in heart and in deeds and its ok if it’s not displayed in the clothes. This new Wonder Woman looks a 21st century Wonder Woman and a more impressive warrior with her rolled up sleeves and a jacket with pockets.

They even have provided a new origin story of Wonder Woman. Some dark figures attacked Paradise Island and killed almost all Amazons. Diana was sent away by Hippolyta with some trusted soldiers when she was only 3. She is now brought up in an urban setting and has no memory of Paradise Island. She has not yet realized her powers but gradually she will gain them.
