Golden Girdle of Gaea

Girdle means belt and ‘Gaea’ is the Goddess Earth (the Mother Nature) in Greek mythology. Thus the term ‘Golden Girdle of Gaea’ refers to the belt the Goddess Gaea possessed as a symbol of her reign.

This girdle is a fictional object presented in DC Comics’ story of Wonder Woman.

When Olympian Gods created Amazons of Themysciria, they appointed Hippolyta; Diana’s mother and Antiope; Diana’s aunt, as the rulers of that tribe. They were made co queens and both of them were given a Golden Girdle of Gaea. Those girdles were made from the original girdle that belonged to the Earth Goddess Gaea. The girdles provided the queens with special strength and they also enhanced their other abilities.

According to a Greek myth, the greatest Greek superhero – Heracles (Hercules) was supposed to carry out a penance. As a part of this penance he was assigned 12 tasks known as ‘twelve labors’. Ninth of those tasks was to obtain the Golden Girdle that was given to the Amazon Queen Hippolyta. Hercules’ half brother Ares; the War God and a major enemy to Wonder Woman had suggested this task. And Hercules was successful to complete his labor.

Now Hippolyta had no girdle but soon Antiope denounced the Olympian Gods and left Themysciria Amazons giving her girdle to Hippolyta. When Antiope had left, some Amazons who were faithful to her had accompanied her. They started living in Bana-Mighdall; another Amazon nation. These people formed a group and acquired the stolen girdle of Hippolyta back. They preserved it as an heirloom.

After thousands of years, Wonder Woman discovered Bana-Mighdall and fought with Shim'Tar, an efficient warrior from Bana-Mighdall. Shim'Tar used the powers of the Golden Girdle and Wonder Woman was about to lose when Hermes, an Olympian God came to her aid. Diana thus won the battle and the Golden Girdle. She returned to Themysciria and handed over the girdle to her mother Hippolyta.

As a result Hippolyta now had both the girdles. So Goddess Hestia took the girdle given by Antiope to Hippolyta back and forged the ‘Lasso of Truth’ out of it and gifted it to Diana the Wonder Woman.
