‘The New, Original Wonder Woman’ was a film released in 1975 and telecasted on ABC network, in which Wonder Woman was played by Lynda Carter and Steve Trevor was played by Lyle Waggoner. This film proved to be a grand success and thus, two more one hour episodes were ordered by ABC. They were telecasted some weeks later and even they turned out to be success.
This made ABC order 11 more episodes and the show was placed in regular rotation from 1976. Every Wednesday night was dedicated to ‘Wonder Woman’ T.V. series after that. The first episode of ‘Wonder Woman’ series, ‘Wonder Woman Meets The Baroness Paula Von Gunther’ was aired on ABC network on 21st April, 1976, with Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman.
The show was very successful but ABC network did not renew it after the 13th episode of first season. So the series was taken up by CBS network and more 46 episodes were aired in two seasons. On CBS network the title of the series was changed to ‘The New Adventures of Wonder Woman’ and the first episode ‘The Return of Wonder Woman’ was telecasted on 16th September, 1977.
The plot of the T.V. series was based on the ‘Wonder Woman’ of DC Comics and the setting was that of World War II. In the Bermuda Triangle there is a secret island called ‘Paradise Island’ where Major Steve Trevor crash lands and is saved by Diana. She is an Amazon princess who has acquired many special magical powers and fighting skills through Amazon training. She is the one who is chosen to accompany Steve to USA and help in the battle against Nazis. There she takes up the identity of Diana Prince and becomes Steve’s secretary in military. Whenever necessary she spins around and turns into the Wonder Woman carrying Lasso of truth, Golden Tiara, Invisible Jet and Bracelets of Victory.
Producing Wonder Woman series set in 1940s was a bit expensive; so; in second season the time frame was changed to modern times; that of 1970s. Wonder Woman is shown to be fighting on behalf of a government agency - ‘Inter-Agency Defense Command’ (IADC). Joe Atkinson is the head of IADC. Steve Trevor is replaced by his son Steve Trevor Jr., who looks exactly like his father and the character was played by Lyle Waggoner himself. Thus the age of the hero (Steve Trevor Jr.) is made to match the age of immortal and ever young Wonder Woman in the new time line.
There are some variations shown in the T.V. series which are not in the comic. For example, if Wonder Woman removes her golden belt, she loses her energy. Her age is never mentioned in comics but in the first episode on CBS, Wonder Woman herself says that she will be celebrating her 2,527th birthday. In the comics the bracelets of victory were made of Amazonium but in the series, they used Feminum to make it. In the comics, Diana used to spin her Lasso of truth around her to turn into Wonder Woman, but on T.V. she herself used to spin around. Originally, in the comics, Steve Trevor was blonde but because Lyle Waggoner has dark hair, comics too darkened Trevor’s hair.
The last two episodes of Wonder Woman series, ‘Phantom Of The Roller Coaster - Part 1&2’ were aired on CBS on 11th and 24th of November, 1979. In these episodes, Diana is searching for the leader of some foreign spy group when she reaches an amusement park in Washington. There she meets a veteran who lives under a roller coaster and haunts that park.
Apart from Lynda Carter and Lyle Waggoner, other cast of ‘Wonder Woman’ series was Carolyn Jones, Beatrice Straight, Debra Winger, Beatrice Colen, Richard Eastham, Tom Kratochzil, Saundra Sharp, Henry Gibson and Jennifer Darling.
