We friends were waiting for the upcoming issue of Wonder Woman and wanted to know what happened next. But to our surprise there was no consecutive issue. Suddenly out of no where there emerged an issue number 1 and I had to confirm if I was by mistake not transported to 1940s. To separate the old Wonder Woman from the new, transformed Wonder Woman, DC Comics invented a new idea.

Instead of continuing with the old numbering, they launched a new Wonder Woman. This was a third Wonder Woman comic’s series and the issue number 1 was published in June 2006.For the convenience sake, there was a leap of one year and a new Wonder Woman story was brought in. Diana had disappeared for a long time but there are reports that she was seen with I Ching.

After coming back, she takes up the identity of Diana Prince and becomes a secret agent of Meta Human Affairs department. Her first mission is to rescue her sister Donna Troy who is kidnapped by her enemies. Circe is the major villain of this story. Justice League is formed and the adventures of these super heroes succeed. There were talks that the writer Picoult could not give her best as she was asked to hurry up by DC Comics.

It was really frustrating for me to see all these ventures of DC Comics. Was it necessary to introduce a new Wonder Woman? They could have very much continued with the old numbering. Same story that is published in this new #1 could be included in the issue that was to follow. Was this a mere publicity stunt? Did they just want to see how many people are going to react to the experiments they are doing with everyone’s favorite character Wonder Woman? Or may be they were getting short of ideas or they felt the series was getting boring and they wanted to bring in some change? Or they were just seeking attention? Don’t know. But I feel this was altogether an unnecessary step.
